Do I Need to Vaccinate My Pet?

When puppies and kittens are still nursing, their mother's milk provides them with various antibodies and nutrients that provide them with a frontline of protection against viruses. However, as soon as puppies and kittens begin weaning off their mother's milk, they no longer have the same support they once did. Vaccinations serve to bridge that gap and protect your beloved companion from a host of general and species-specific illnesses. If you're unsure whether our vaccinates for pets are right for yours, our team is here to answer any of your questions and break down some of the benefits of our services, which include:

  • Strengthening your pet's immune system against contagious, disease-causing organisms.
  • Protecting your pet against life-threatening diseases like parvovirus or distemper.
  • Improving public health by reducing your pet's chances of spreading disease.
  • Extending your pet's life as sickly cats and dogs have reduced lifespans.
  • Allowing your pet to socialize as boarding and grooming facilities often require vaccinations.

Meeting Your Pet's Core and Non-Core Needs

At Sarasota Veterinary Services, we've spent years improving and adjusting our pet vaccination services to be as comprehensive as possible. When you bring your pet in for their initial appointment, we'll begin by taking a detailed look at their vaccination and medical records. Whether your pet hasn't received any vaccinations or there's been a gap in their coverage, you can rest assured that our team will get them up to speed. We readily accept walk-ins if your pet requires vaccinations as soon as possible.

We offer core and non-core vaccinations, depending on your pet's unique needs. Core pet vaccinations are those recommended for cats and dogs alike. Non-core vaccinations, however, are typically administered because of your pet's lifestyle, geographic location, or inherent exposure to diseases. Depending on your pet's species, our veterinarian may recommend:

Canine Vaccinations

  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough): As a non-core vaccination, our veterinarian may recommend Bordetella if your dog regularly encounters other dogs or is routinely boarded. We normally recommend the first Bordetella vaccination at around nine weeks old for puppies.
  • Parvovirus: One of the leading causes of sickness in puppies is parvovirus. We'll provide your puppy with their first vaccination between 6-8 weeks old and administer a booster once every three weeks until they are 15 weeks old.
  • Rabies: As a core vaccination, most states require that dogs be vaccinated for rabies. Initially, the vaccination will be administered when your puppy is 16 weeks old, and a booster shot will be given after their first year.

Feline Vaccinations

  • Feline Herpesvirus: This vaccination is considered a core vaccine, and kitten typically receives their first dose between the ages of 6-8 weeks old. You may need to bring your kitten in for a booster once every three weeks until they reach 15 weeks old.
  • Feline Leukemia: As a core vaccination, feline leukemia is the number one cause of death in cats. We'll administer your kitten's first vaccine at 12 weeks old and their first booster between 15-16 weeks old.
  • Rabies: Just as in dogs, rabies is a core vaccination for cats. Our office will give your kitten their first vaccine between 12-16 weeks and a booster every first year.
